FAQ and How-Tos

What is the address of your office for returning transparencies?

Use the physical address on our Contacts page.

What is the preferred method of shipment for returning transparencies?

Any express air courier delivery service offering tracking and delivery confirmation of parcels is acceptable. Over the years FedEx® has provided reliable service.

Why do your photo handling instructions suggest that transparencies should be enclosed in sealed water-resistant plastic bags when being shipped?

We live in a coastal, temperate rainforest. At times is gets very wet here—up to 70 inches of rain a year. Inadvertently things that travel outdoors get wet. We find that 2¢ spent on a plastic bag to protect valuable original film is very cheap insurance. From experience we have learned that a lot of air freight is exposed to some amount of moisture. This is due to exposure to condensation which is common when an object is exposed to the rapidly changing atmospheric conditions found in the cargo bay of a jet aircraft. This is also due to parcels sitting on loading ramps in freight pods at air terminals during a torrential downpour. As we said, a 2¢ plastic bag is very cheap insurance.

If I can register only one account per computer on your website, what is the best way to register so that several people can have access and our staff can receive email notices?

Fill out the registration form something like this:
  • in the first name field, enter your department or a name that identifies your group
  • in the last name field, enter your company or business name
  • in the email address field, enter a "role" or "catchall" email address, i.e., the address that is commonly used for receiving email for the entire staff or office
We use for our general office email.

I am an art director and would like a "comp" image of a subject I found searching your stock Photo Indexes. Are there downloadable images on your website?

At present the website consists of the searchable Jeff Gnass Photography™ stocklists only. As photos in the 80,000-photo film library become available in digital format, comp images will be uploaded and made available online for "comping" purposes. We expect this to occur on a regular basis. Each photo will be watermarked visibly and nonvisibly to assure its copyright protection. Only registered photo buyers and creative professionals will have access to download comp images, as outlined in the Terms of Use agreement. If you would like to receive notification when new images or subjects become available, subscribe to our email notices with the registration form. You may also edit an existing registration record if you did not subscribe initially.

What is the best way to use the Place Name search?

Type in a name or partial name of a specific geographic place you are trying to locate. By specific place we mean a place name on a map or from an atlas. If you type in more than one word, the words must exactly match a word phrase in our database in order for you to find any results. Be aware of spelling differences that occur for certain names, e.g., "Fjord" and "Fiord". Both are correct spellings in different place names. It is best to limit your search to common place names, or to single or partial words. Spelling errors can be unforgiving. If in doubt whether a name is plural or singular, use the shortest or simplest word form. Please read our Search tips for more details.

When are the Photo Indexes the best way to research the stock photo coverage you have?

If you want to see the complete coverage in our photo library of a state or country, or view our special listings of Public Lands USA and General Subjects, then this is the preferred method to research the library. Choose a Photo Index from the menu and follow the prompts. Most of the listings can be viewed quickly.

Can photos on your website be used for any other purpose if it would be for personal use only?

No. All photographs are protected by copyright laws, which we vigorously defend. We do not allow any photos, on our website or published anywhere else, to be reproduced for any purpose whatsoever without express written permission. Please read our Copyright and Terms of Use documents for more details.

Can I buy an autographed Jeff Gnass book from you?

Yes. Autographed copies of books shown on our Publications page, including several out of print editions, can be ordered in limited quantities directly from us. If you prefer, you may send us your own copy of Jeff's book for signing. Please include sufficient return shipping costs.

I saw in a publication a Jeff Gnass photograph that I would like to have framed to hang on my wall. Do you sell prints?

Yes. We offer only the highest quality fine art reproductions. Each one is custom made using the latest professional laser scanning technology to create a high-resolution digital image file. Then, minor density and color corrections are made in order to create as accurate a reproduction of the image as possible. This allows the superior detail and quality of light captured in the original large format transparency to be reproduced. This process is very labor intensive. If the original transparency is not in the library, it must first be returned from an editor or publisher. Then it is sent to one of several professional print making labs we have selected to work with. Once the print has been made, it must be shipped back to our office for Jeff Gnass' signature, then shipped again to the customer. Shipping is costly as all prints are over matted which adds significantly to the print dimensions. All shipping charges are paid by the purchaser. If you are a serious collector of fine art photographic prints, please inquire for more details.
